About Chris Bell
Chris loves to create items with texture, creating tactile worked surfaces with the clay and glazes that he uses. He also likes the contrasting smooth surface qualities that he can obtain when firing at lower temperatures, and so also makes items that suit these reflective smooth surfaces. He is currently enjoying making a mixture of thrown and slab built work.
Chris uses a variety of clays but most items are fired to high stoneware temperatures - 1280 C - in a gas kiln, where they are starved of oxygen to create the interesting glaze surface effects that he likes. The low fired items are "Raku" fired, that is heated up to about 1000 C and then taken out of the kiln while still hot using tongs and placed into sawdust to again create dramatic glaze surface qualities. Some examples of his current work are shown here.
